Explores how the colour blue embodies sadness, melancholy, and emotional distress. There is a myth that states in the 18th and 19th centuries, ships would raise blue flags upon the loss of a captain or officer, signalling mourning as they returned to port. This maritime tradition serves as a metaphor for the way I experience sadness.
The open sea evokes a profound emotional response—vast, unpredictable, and seemingly without escape. The ocean’s boundlessness mirrors the overwhelming nature of sadness, where external forces seem to strip away control, and the fear of being consumed by emotional tides feels ever-present. This sense of helplessness, like the potential of capsizing in the depths, parallels how melancholy can flood one’s reality.
Through this body of work, I investigate the consuming nature of sadness and how it can obscure one's perception of the world. Art has been my means of expression, a way to process and heal through the darker emotions. By creating this series, I aim to foster a more intimate understanding of my own vulnerabilities, seeking to embrace the shadows of self rather than resist them.
